"UW Alum Tearing Up the World of BMX," January 30, 2013

As the beginning of second semester rolls in, UW-Madison students are starting to get back on their grind. For UW alum and Bicycle Motocross (BMX) pro Brian Kachinsky – he never got off the grind, even after he graduated. In this case “grind” not only refers to Kachnisky’s motivation and drive, but also his favorite BMX trick.

For almost two decades, 31-year-old Kachinsky has dedicated his life to BMX. This extreme sport involves doing different tricks and maneuvers on a 20-inch bicycle while utilizing ramps, railings, staircases, and anything else that happens to be in front of him

"'Wreck-it-Ralph' Has a UW Tie," August 29, 2012

“Wreck-It Ralph,” Disney’s 3D animated film about a video game character who smashes everything in his path, made history on Sunday after earning $49.1 million in ticket sales, the highest-grossing opening weekend in Disney animation history. The mega-success of the flick was predicted early on by the film’s assistant picture editor and UW graduate Rick Hammel.

“Right from the get-go I knew this movie was going to be awesome,” Hammel said in an interview with University Communications.

In this world, you never know exactly when or even how your UW background will come in handy. For former Badger swimmer and then-aspiring actor Anders Holm, it was during a post-graduation internship at a Hollywood production company.

Holm, whose pool specialty was the 50-meter freestyle, was looking for a break. He was able to bond with a top producer at the production company over their mutual interest in competitive swimming.

A group of University of Wisconsin-Madison students has been awarded the national title for the KPMG International Case Competition, and will be representing the U.S. this April when they take on teams from more than two dozen nations in Hong Kong.

The undergraduate team, including Jordan Heginbottom, Hannah Sugars, Matthew Zimdars and Andrea Nichols, was not expecting to make it this far when it participated in the first round of the competition last November.

The Deputy Police Chief at Virginia Tech presented the profile of a school shooter to students and faculty at the University of Wisconsin, Thursday.

Gene Deisinger addressed the audience during the second annual End Violence On Campus conference and said school shooters are often male, Caucasian, control oriented and obsessed with violence. Deisinger then showed listeners a picture of a person that perfectly fits this description - the photograph was of him.

With the entire University of Wisconsin campus energized about the first home football game of the season, rain may not be the only thing putting a damper on the festivities.

With a recent policy change, umbrellas and other carry-ins such as flags and signs will no longer be allowed inside of Camp Randall Stadium, UW Athletics spokesperson Justin Doherty said.

Besides these restrictions, Doherty said UW urged the games’ attendees to “lighten their load.”
